Thanks to all who attended
our April AGM, at Caledonian’s Slateford Brewery. The brewery itself was a
great setting for our AGM. Unfortunately, the way we were handled by the
brewery wasn’t very good and a number of you made your feelings known. It
was felt that we never received value for money and there was no brewer on
hand to answer our questions - just a representative from Caley’s ‘Entertainments’
dept.
Bill Cooper had done some
brews with a Target substitute hop variety. These are high alpha-acid hops
(~13.64%). Bill presented us with a comparative tasting of a 2 identical
brews one made with Target as the bittering hop and the other with the new
variety.
Les
presented us with his new book as a raffle prize and this time it’s a
brewing book. His book is a collection of recipes – spanning many breweries
(including defunct ones) and many years. His book is an ideal aid for the
craft brewer who wants to get an idea of what ingredients etc make a beer
style or who wants to re-create their favourite beer.

Inspecting the coppers.

John McGarva "One day I'll have one of
these myself" (since this photo was taken John has set himself up in
business with the Tryst Brewery in Larbert - see Links
page). Also at this meeting John won the
first ever copy of "The
Home Brewer's Recipe Database" in the raffle which was duly signed by
Les Howarth. Coincidence?
